You should use something stiff and clear. Acetate is fine. Draw the form that you want and then lay the acatate over it and cut through the shape. If you want it to repeat at exact intervals you may have to work this out and measure it on the wall. Painting, roller or spraying is fine but if you are spraying try to make sure the erea around the edge is big enough so the paint doesnt spray over the edges on to the wall.(It is easy to do and not notice) If you dont want a soft edge while spraying it will be wise to make sure the mask is held flat.
IF you want to draw shapes before painting, than try tying string onto pencil, and holding other end on wall at same place This will give shapes you draw the the same angles. You could do this to draw one circle and lots of half and quarter moons.
What you might try is to get the deisgns you want on the wall, like coloring book pages or your own drawing, and enlarge them to the size you want. Buy some graphite or transfer paper (available at Michaels' and other craft stores). Place the graphite paper under the paper you have the designs on,and place them both on the wall where you want the desing. Using an old ink pen or a stylus, draw over all the lines of the design. Because of the graphite paper underneath, the image will then transfer to the wall, and you can then fill it in with paint and a brush. It's easy to do, and much easier than cutting all those stencils.
