Generally from what I've seen stencilers use a watered down version of the color that they want( although I have found that the paint gets too runny).I use a thicker version of the paint and if I want it to be lighter looking I add more white. You can use fast dryng acrylics that come in small premixed colors in containers that are ready to go for painting.JoAnn Fabrics has these paints. The colors are pretty affordable. You'll need to have a round stumpy lookng stenciling brush although I've often used a small cut up sponge for dabbing paint through a stencil too. You'll need to have paper towels and a piece of thick paper( even a paper bag will do) to blot the brush or sponge onto first before applying the paint to the wall. Stencilers use a sort of pouncing technique wit h the round brush to get the look that they want. They do this because they want a minimal amount of paint to be on the stencil to get that more subtle Colonial American traditional look. You can do what YOU want however depending n the look that you want to achieve.Just practice on the paper first to see what you like first. Good luck!
thick stencil paints and a hard bristle stipple brush works best.
