Stenciling Question And Answer

can someone give me tips for stenciling t-shirts?

can you please give me some tips on what kind of spray paint to use (and what brand would you recommend) and what should i make the stencils out of. im going to be stenciling black shirts, so i want to use white paint. i cant find any freezer paper where i live, so i cant use that for stencils, and i havent been able to find white textile paint either. thanks

I usually use contact paper on card stock to make stencils for painting. I think it's a little more durable, but it's still easy to cut through to make the stencils. Most pre-mixed acrylic paints will work on fabrics(as long as they're thick enough to not bleed through the fabric), white on black might take two coats. I usually end up doing fabric stenciling with liquid paint and a foam brush, so I'm can't help with the spray painting stuff.

Make sure your item is clean. Cotton works best. If it is brand new, wash and dry it to remove sizing and finishes. Press it flat with a hot iron. Put newspaper inside. Cut your stencil. A manila envelope, sheet of plastic, cardboard, something sturdier than paper. You can cut it out with scissors, box cutter or exacto knife. Tape the stencil flat to your shirt. Rather than spray paint, I would suggest Delta Ceramcoat with a foam or stencil brush. Dab it into the stencil. Carefully remove the stencil and let dry for 3 days. Iron the shirt after this, inside out with newspaper between the shirt and the ironing board. This "sets" the paint.
