hawk your pictures around all the trendy galleries,if they are any good they will snap you up & put on an exibition.other than that organise your own thing in a cheap or freindly space & invite all & sundry to veiw your wares.
Join your local community art league...they will help you show. Most communities have a monthly art walk where artists show their work in local venues and galleries. It's a cheap way to get out there and get known.
If your work is good, a gallery will take a couple of pieces to show to potential buyers to note their reaction.
I just got my paintings into an exhibition. I rang an art centre that was due to have an exhibition and they looked at and took my work. Find your local art centres and be brave and contact them. Good luck. Its so fantastic to see people admiring your work and makes you feel happy.
Look up all your local art societies , visit their galleries and exhibitions and talk, talk, talk to all the artists you meet there.
I joined my local art society in 1996 and even became their exhibition secretary in charge of hanging the 200 plus membership's works.
I Pot,sculpt and Paint in oils (mainly) See some of my works online, see my 360 on yahoo answers for a link or two.(maybe you would be interested in joining one or two of those sites,i can recommend artsig)
I live in Cornwall UK,but most places on the planet have art societies of one sort or another.
Go get your works and yourself noticed.
If you are considering self promotion then do your work as badges and/or T-shirts and just turn up with a few friends at all the local galleries and Art events all wearing your stuff.Invite the local press or even photo the stuff on your mates and give the pics to the local free press, they often appreciate free pics and often encourage people to submit work to save money. You may have to forgo your copywrite on the pictures but that is a risk worth taking!
