Photoshop or Corel Paint Shop ro? You can download free trials. Try maybe the contour effect. It'll give you something to do, anyway, did it and I'm addicted to photoshop now
I dont know what your teacher wants you to do, but jsut print out the picture you want, use some seethrough paper, or hold up the pic behind the see through paper and hold up to a light, then take a pencil and trace out the major shapes, and then details, and cut it out. and do whatever else you want to do. Its way cheaper tehn using photoshop.
iluvsublime28 gives a good suggestion... you could use GIMP [freeware bitmap editor] as well...
When I make stencils I frequently cut them out of cereal boxes because the box cardboard holds up to a fair amount of abuse... there are some synthetic stencil materials that work quite well.
When you work your image in a bitmap editor you will want to increase the contrast & reduce the number of colors [a max of 3 colors would be good]
If you take a shot of a person's face against a light or white plain background, transfer it to a computer and convert it to greyscale then apply contrast/brightness – high contrast, high brightness you will find the shadows are left, print that out, stick it to card and cut out the black areas. An alternative is to posterise the image and select one of the colours and use that to create your stencil, selecting a light colour and applying that to a stencil and spraying white on a dark background can be effective.
