Stencil Art Question And Answer
Spray Paint Art?
I cut stencils for spray paint, and I'd like to know of better materials to make stencils. I use plain cardboard, but it's too thick. Does anybody know of any good cutting materials to make stencils with? I cut with an exacto knife. Also, any high quality spray paint? Please give websites or brand names.

GO TO A LOCAL ART STORE AND ASK IF THEY HAVE ANY THICK PAPER I CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAME OF IT! IT HAS SLICK SIDES AND IT IS KINDA LIKE SERAND RAP ON TO OF REALLY THICK (BUT NOT THICK AS CARD BOARD) PAPPER, EASIER TO CUT
People who do stenciling for home decor use a type of thin but rigid plastic. It's translucent, so you can plan out your design on paper and then trace it onto the plastic. They have it at many craft stores. If push comes to shove, you can use transparency film like offices use on overheads or any sort of rigid plastic. I put a link below to some street art in the Dallas area. One of my son's friends is an amazing artist, but if he gets caught street painting anymore, he will go to jail. I keep telling him just to get big canvas or to use wall sized masonite and he could sell his stuff.
Hey -
I am a stencil/ spray paint artist. I use Mylar/Acetate, and transperancy sheets. The Mylay and Acetate can be purchased at most art stores. It is a thin plastic, that you can re-use over and over again. You just have to wash it. Transperancy sheets are the ones they use in schools, they can be found at any office supply store.
I would suggest the Mylar or Acetate sheets. One sheet (With a stencil on it) can be used a good 200 times before it starts to go bad. Both are washable and really easy to cut small details on.
As for paint, a really good brand is Belton. It last an extremely long time, and is good quality. Only bad side is it is expensive.
Colorplace (Wal-mart brand) and Krylon are good enough for most projets though.
